We have a client who is 3000 miles away and who is just about to lose their last proficient operator. I have suggested that we should therefore automate all their day end processes. Some of which reside on PC's (client access file transfers etc).

As well as being able to control the PC based batch processes I would like to integrate some method of exception reporting that results in an IP based protocol reporting to our site - this might be XML-RPC or HTTP etc.

Since the client does not want to spend very much money and we would like to ensure that they get the best possible support response in the event of any problems does any one have any thoughts on:

1. The best means of implementing the alert system.
2. The best means of controlling PC batch jobs.

my first thought is XML and SOAP on the PC client, AS400 and support listener...
