Thanks for that - I'll give it a go...

Another related issue: I'm sure that it was possible to set up a user who
was not able to sign on as an interactive user but could be used by java
clients.

I've tried this now and it gives a user disabled message

Am I misremembering or was it possible to do this and not anymore?

Take a look at the AS400 method "setGuiAvailable(boolean guiAvailable)".

Theoretically, if you set the value false, it won't pop up a dialog box.  I
think it was broken in older versions of JT400, but has since been fixed.
