BTW, if this is a money amount, I would strongly suggest using
com.ibm.math.BigDecimal which performs true decimal arithmetic and is a
lot faster than java.math.BigDecimal.  Not all fractional amounts
convert properly to double, which is a binary representation.

You'd need to remove the commas and switch the sign to the front to
parse this but that shouldn't be too hard with a char array or
StringBuffer or with String.replaceAll in JDK 1.4.
