My understanding is that IBM gave some VAJ code to eclipse.org The key concept with eclipse is that it is an ILE looking for a language. In other words, it provides ILE functionality regardless of the language. The first language they implemented is java but I've seen plugins for COBOL, C, and perl around the web. It does not look like VAJ, the interface is different but since eclipse runs on the JRE (instead of hiding it like VAJ) you choose what JDK you want to use (in fact, you could use multiple similtaneously). You could also write COBOL programs using the same interface. if you haven't seen it yet, the web site is http://www.eclipse.org Might help explain it better than I ever could.... dan -----Original Message----- From: Chris Proctor [mailto:cproctor@gartsports.com] Sent: Wednesday, September 18, 2002 2:54 PM To: 'java400-l@midrange.com' Subject: RE: VAJava??? Is this not the case? Chris, I really dig VAJ but IBM seems to favor Websphere studio (powered by eclipse). I'm still using VAJ but I have downloaded eclipse on my home PC. It even runs in Linux.... However, at this point in time, I prefer VAJ. IMHO, it' hard to go wrong with IBM.... See what you started, Chris? ;-) Anyway, we're going to be using Java for some of our applications in the not too distant future and I was wondering what the tool of choice is for Java developers on the AS/400. Originally, I thought VAJava because it's big blue's, but now I'm hearing stories that IBM may not support it in the future. This may be way off, and if it is I'd like to get some feedback on it. Thanks for your input.
