I think even though you caught the end, you hit the nail on the head.  I had
an idea that implementing a thin client with a server on the backend would
help things but it is out of my league to try and write a true client/server
implementation.  If they are Open Source solutions that may help me then I
have something else to research.

I have a few things to try now and I don't know what method will work best,
I'll probably need to implement a mixture of all.

Also, do all the below mentioned pooling tools work on an AS400 environment?
