I should probably also state the results.

The speed was 10000000 times faster, for the first 100 or so
records.. after that, it slowed to 1 every 2 or 3 seconds.
Not sure why that is.

I debugged my connections and at any given time there is
only one open, which is what I wanted.  So there must be a
problem somewhere else in my application... hmm..
