Dear Mr. Upshall:

Yes indeed. All you have to do is make sure the contents of the field
are absolutely canonical.

Try setting up the file the way it was, and using QuestView to populate
a few records with sample data. Then read the records with your
application, to make sure what you're getting looks like what OPM
applications like QuestView get. Assuming it is, you simply have to make
sure all the patterns fit properly.

Also, please note that if you're also dealing with null-capable fields,
you will also have to deal with null-maps. I have no idea how one would
do that from Java; I can barely do it from MI.
