Title: RE: Tomcat on the AS/400

Glenn,

I'm not sure about the status of Apache with Tomcat on AS/400, but you can certainly install Tomcat of the IFS and run it standalone which could work for your intranet requirements. I did this as a complete webserver/java novice and got Tomcat's example servlets and jsps running within an hour just following the unix instructions in the Tomcat installation guide.

To install different versions of the JDK you may need to either load them from your OS/400 CDs, or order ptfs. GO LICPGM, then option 10, and look at 5769JV1 - you must have the base option plus one or more other options which relate to the different JDK releases. J2SDK 1.3 can be installed on both V4R4 and V4R5 - Full information is at

http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/ebusiness/java/java2.htm.

To switch between different Java versions, create a file \QIBM\UserData\Java400\SystemDefault.properties on the IFS containing the line: "java.version=1.1.8" (no quotes) or whatever release you want to use by default. This can be overridden with a parameter on the CL or QShell java commands.

Regards,

Darrell

Subject: Tomcat on the AS/400

We have successfully deployed a web site on a Linux server running
Apache and Tomcat (that accesses AS/400 data using JDBC), and now
want to upgrade our intranet site (hosted on an AS/400) to include
some servlets and JSPs.

My experiences with WebSphere have not been entirely positive; what
is the current start of the art w.r.t. running Apache and Tomcat on
the AS/400?  Can someone post pointers to information on this?

Also, could someone post a link to how to switch JVMs from 1.1.8 to
1.2 (we're at V4R5 on one box and V4R4 on the other)?  Is 1.3
supported on either of those operating systems?
