Hey - the article came out first :-). And Kevin and I (and of course many others) tried to review the IIC doc very closely based on feedback we had received from several customers (internal and external) about the existing getting started documentation. By the way, thanks very much for the nice words on the product (yes, I know you are only in the initial stages yet) - they are good to hear once in a while. That document is fairly concise and spells out exactly what you need to do to make the installation a success... Our one problem was that we didn't have the prereqs (we were missing JDK 1.2 which is like option 3 of some licensed application; it tells you on the web page.) It is also extremely important to have all the latest PTFs at your side; for us it was SF99027 and SF99141 along with the WAS 3.5 disks (which install from the PC... wierd, but it worked well). Also, make sure you know which version of WAS you are on. We "thought" we were on 3.0.1, when we were really on 2.0.3. It makes a *big* difference.... As to support, we found *all* the second tier support we encountered (we spoke to Josh and Paul) were excellent. First tier, however, seemed only to be able to parrot, "Intall PTFs, Install PTFs, *brrrrawk*, Install PTFs." I had to give the guy some sunflower seeds to get him to get us to tier 2 ;-) Frances also co-authored a really good article I bumped into... (not sure where) Athough it really said the same thing as the IBM document, it was more readable (IMHO) and was nice to get a second opinion. dan -----Original Message----- From: Frances Stewart [mailto:francess@us.ibm.com] Sent: Friday, June 15, 2001 12:55 PM To: JAVA400-L@midrange.com Subject: RE: Websphere 3.5 Installation You may want to check out the new Install and Initial Configuration guide which has a plannign section and checklist. v3.5.3 Standard Edition: http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/software/websphere/wsappserver/ docs/as400v35std/docs/indexiic.html v3.5.3 Advanced Edition: http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/software/websphere/wsappserver/ docs/as400v35/docs/indexiic.html Frances Stewart WebSphere Application Server for iSeries 400 IBM Rochester "Tanveer, Mohammad" <MTanveer@friedmancorp.com>@midrange.com on 06/15/2001 10:51:59 AM Please respond to JAVA400-L@midrange.com Sent by: owner-java400-l@midrange.com To: "'JAVA400-L@midrange.com'" <JAVA400-L@midrange.com> cc: "'daniel.eyers@honeywell.com'" <daniel.eyers@honeywell.com> Subject: RE: Websphere 3.5 Installation We are trying to install WAS 3.5.3. Is there any good advice before we even start? Any contact numbers for big help from IBM. Thanks -----Original Message----- From: Eyers, Daniel [mailto:daniel.eyers@honeywell.com] Sent: Friday, June 15, 2001 9:44 AM To: 'JAVA400-L@midrange.com' Subject: Websphere 3.5 Installation Well, we just finished our install of WAS 3.5.3, and I have to say, I'm pretty impressed with the capabilities of WAS. The IBM support team was very good helping us through our issues (we missed a prereq) and got us the PTFs and things we needed in a timely and efficent manner. I didn't think I would like the admin console but I have found it to be a great way to manage the running of the site; this is functionality I have *not* seen with Tomcat. The differences between WAS 3.5.3 v. 2.0.3.1 is night and day; I encourage anyone who is using any older version of WAS to take advantage of the upgrade. My congratulations to the WAS team... Now, if only we could get IBM to market it. My great fear for WAS is that it'll be like the AS/400; a great product with no marketing support.
