Richard,

I am afraid I must disagree here. The only statement
you made that was factual was the statements about
Tomcat not supporting ejbs. This is absolutly the
case, and I applaud apache for going this route. Ejbs
unfortunatly are not nearly ready for prime time yet.
They are slow resource intensive monstrosities that,
at the moment should not even be considered for a
production application, but of course this is my
opinion. Aside from that JDBC connection pooling *IS*
supported in Tomcat. Also connection pooling is very
simple to do on your one as well. In fact if anyone
wants some code to do just that in a stand alone
implementation I will be happy to provide it.

As for j2ee specific things like JMS, JTA etc. That is
a seperate service in and of itself and, in all
probablilty, should not be included in a Web
Application Server. At the very least it does not hurt
anything (and increases performance) to have them
running in thier own environment anyway. I am not even
really sure that Websphere has these options built in
to the product either (correct me if I am wrong). Now
as for comparing Apples and Oranges, I think we are
absolutly comparing Apples and Apples.

Now as for it being a reference implementation. Yes it
is, but it is built on production server technology
(Sun's Java Server if I remember correctly). Its been
proven to be stable at quite a few sites by now.

And last but not least, it is completly Open Source so
if I want to write a couple of additions that build in
support for JMS or JTA or anything else I can without
a problem and them submit them to apache for inclusion
into the product. Don't get me wrong I am not a big
Open Source fanatic but it is a feature of the
product.

I hope I wasn't argumentative here, I tend to be a
little passionate anymore when it comes to some
technologies.
