Thanks for your input, Jay. I stand by my statement that this list is for
Java development, not Java newbies. There are already MANY other newbie
forums, much better than this one. The Sun site (www.javasoft.com) has a
wide variety of educational options, from tutorials to forums. For example,
try completing all the tutorials on this page:

http://www.javasoft.com/docs/books/tutorial/?frontpage-spotlight

My tone of late has to do with poor programming techniques and some people's
insistence that RPG ILE is an OO language. It has to do with comparisons of
RPG vs. Java, and sarcastic comments about the language. It has to do with
statements about writing bad code because of customer deadlines. It has to
do with wanting to "write Java" without wanting to learn OO. These are the
kind of attitudes I don't want to see condoned, much less fostered, here.

And it's got nothing to do with newbies, per se. I am a big supporter of
and contributor to the newbie community. If you'd like to see my
contributions, please visit the following links:

I don't discourage newbies, I just think there are other places for the
long, pointless dicussions which have been taking place here of late. Did
you actually get something out of the discussion of initializing a String
variable? If so, perhaps I'm wrong and someone else would be better running
this list. Perhaps I've served my time and should move on.

If people would like to turn this particular list into a Java 101 list,
please feel free to do so. I simply won't participate. And if it goes in
that direction, I'll be happy to turn over the reins to someone better
suited.

I don't own this list. But while I'm moderator, I have some small input
into its direction. It is a Java/400 list, devoted to developing
applications for the AS/400 using Java. As I said, if you want to ask "How
do I do this in Java, where I could do it this way in RPG", great. But if
you're coming here to learn the basics of Java, I think there are much, much
better ways to spend your time. IBM's Alphaworks, Sun's Javasoft, Java
Boutique, Gamelan, there are tons of superb beginner's sites out there.

Joe

And just to set the record straight, my questions about IP filtering were on
MIDRANGE-L, not here.
