To throw my Unix two cents in.  You can create a file called ".profile" in
the users home directory.  This file will be run every time the user goes
into qshell.  So if you have a .profile

<BOF>
CLASSPATH=".:/mydir"

export CLASSPATH
<EOF>
then the environment can be customized for each developer or user.
