After thinking about this, will it really do much harm? If it works at all like SQL on the AS/400 the SQL command isn't really run until the first fetch is issued. That's when all the magic happens. Before that, preparing a statement, etc, doesn't take much at all. I still agree, though, it's probably not the best way to get the column names. Right now I'm looking through the docs for something that may work.
