WebSphere's JSPs are not packaged in the default package, so to reference
beans in the default package (i.e. SimpleBean) you will need to import it.
Incorporate the following to the top of your jsp, see if it helps:

<%@ page language="java" import="SimpleBean" %>

  I have a simple *.jsp calling a java Bean I keep getting the following
  error!! com.sun.jsp.JspException: Compilation failed
  I am running WebSphere 3.02 on the AS/400 V4R5 JSP 1.0 support
