Alternative to C Lang ?

Hi All, 

We are doing a lot of Java coding on AS400 but we have
a new requirement of writing trigger programs to
reside on AS400 written in non-RPG language. I can
only think of C but is there an alternative ? 
 
> Can I first of all write in Java and if so has
anybody done it ? - Parse Before and After trigger
buffer images and do some processing ? 
 Examples or Links from somebody please  ?

> If C is the best solution, does anybody have a
site/link to some resource.
