PMFJI.  Larry nailed it, but let me just add that your points about the
benefits of analyzing and optimizing a "whole program" are certainly
well-taken, and in a "contained" and statically-analyzable* universe of
bytecode, I'll bet a cup of coffee that OPTIMIZE(40) -- or its equivalents
on whatever platform -- will beat the JIT every time, particularly if the
optimization is feedback-directed.

That is one of the longest sentences I've ever written.

*Of course, the speculatively-hyphenated weasel-word
"statically-analyzable" is technically at odds with the word "compliance."
