The programs would run on the AS400.  I was thinking about using a Java
program that called a CL/RPG to create a file in QTEMP.  The file would
then be used by the Java program to do some processing.  JDBC request would
be made by the Java program using the native driver.

Yes, but the question is which QTEMP?

If you are running programs over a single  AS/400 connection (within the
same
AS/400 job), then there is only one QTEMP, and there should be no problems.
The
problems occur when you, for example, create a file in QTEMP from a program
run
over a connection, and then try to access it with a JDBC request, which is
served by a different job with its own QTEMP; of course the file is not
going to
be there.

As with most thing, it comes down to figuring out what you are trying to
do, and
picking an appropriate solution.
