Chris,

I dont know why cpytostmf is giving you such problems, however, you could
solve it by using a conversion table to tell the as/400 how to convert the
ebcdic '[' to an ascii '['. In the cpytostmf command you would use parms
like:

    .... cvtdta(*tbl) tbl('/QSYS.LIB/MYLIB.LIB/MYTBL.TBL')

where MYTBL.TBL is a copy of the QRMASCII table you have edited. You create
a copy of the table by doing a RTVTBLSRC into a source file like QDDSSRC.
Then use pdm to edit the table. Finally, you create a new table with the
CRTTBL command. We use this kind of technique to handle some problems
importing and exporting ascii EDI files.

Lot of trouble, I know, but its better than trying to remember to use a '^'
in seu.
