Personal favorite: Core Java 1.2 Fundamentals.  It also comes with a text
editor that's integrated with the Sun jdk (so you can compile/run your
examples right from the editor).  After that one, I read the certification
books (The Complete Java 2 Cert. Study Guide, ExamCram Java 2), and treated
the questions as examples to compile/run in the editor.
