For reference on Java and its libraries I would recommend almost all the
books in the O'Reilly series or in the Sun Microsystems series published by
Prentice Hall. The Sun books will have the Sun logo on the cover. Each
book in the series covers a specific Java topic, ie. threads, Swing, AWT,
JDBC, etc.

For learning the Java syntax look for books that are strong in OO and cover
the basics. Many tree killing Java books try to cover to much material and
end up doing a very poor job by not providing a deep enough understanding of
the topics they cover.

If you do not have a strong OO background you may want to consider taking a
class just in OO. As an OO programmer brought into an RPG company I have
found that the biggest learning curve for many programmers moving to Java is
not the Java language but OO concepts. I have first hand knowledge of many
Java programming projects that failed because of poor OO design and
implementation. Like any tool, success only comes from using the tool
correctly.

/Tim
