Nice idea Jim - thanks.  The only thing it doesn't do for me though that the ET
access stuff does is to deal with the conversions (e.g. packed, zoned, etc.)

Perhaps it would be clearer if I explained exactly what I was trying to do.

I have an RPG program that loads its record data into an externally described
data structure.  This DS is now passed as part of a message to the client (in
this case Java) the client has to "unpack" the buffer.  As you can see the base
requirement is the same as for AS/400 record level access except I don't need
the connection piece or the IO methods - just the pack/unpack.
