I agree that Visual Age has some great tools and benefits, it is what I use. I just had some problems looking at my programs the way it presents the methods broke up. I guess it is the COBOL programmer in me that likes to see the whole program on one screen. And maybe since I started with an editor and got use to seeing all my methods and variables declaration on one page, it got me started on the wrong foot. I am starting to get use to the way VA presents the programs now, and I do see the benefit of it. But I just think it is a lot to tackle(new language and new environment) when you just want to get your feet wet. And I guess you are right, I do like to do things the painful way first. I guess I am afraid that I will not understand something if it is done automatically, or course I still don't use SDA for my on-line Cobol programs so take that into consideration. :-) -----Original Message----- From: owner-java400-l@midrange.com [mailto:owner-java400-l@midrange.com]On Behalf Of Jon.Paris@halinfo.it Sent: Thursday, January 20, 2000 11:07 AM To: JAVA400-L@midrange.com Subject: RE: >> I would have to disagree about starting with an IDE(specifically Visual Age) I would have to disagree with your disagreement <vbg> I'm with Jim Mason on this. In my case for slightly different reasons. When I tried Java without an IDE I was constantly having to look up which methods were supported, be aware of the exact case and spelling, likewise for the parameters. It drove me nuts. Once I discovered (in VA Java in my case) that by using Ctrl + Space I could get lists of all methods, parms etc. life became much easier and I could focus on what I was trying to do. There are many other benefits including easy access to help etc. Other than playing I didn't use the GUI capabilities much at all but the method assist, easy testing, debug, etc. made life so much easier. VA Java is resource hungry no doubt - but there are other IDEs with similar capabilities and a smaller footprint. Maybe you enjoy pain for the sake of it <bg> but me I'm a lazy SOB and hate doing more work than I have to! +--- | This is the JAVA/400 Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to JAVA400-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to JAVA400-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to JAVA400-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner: joe@zappie.net +--- +--- | This is the JAVA/400 Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to JAVA400-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to JAVA400-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to JAVA400-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner: joe@zappie.net +---
