There seems to be a lot of overhead in connecting. One minute does seem pretty long though. If you are using the connection in a servlet, you might want to look into connection pooling so that the connections are already open when they need to be used. If you are running the code below on the AS/400, perhaps optimizing the toolbox jar with CRTJVAPGM might help (level 30), although is is alreday done on newer releases. Have you tried connecting with ODBC and do you get similar results?
