I'm no expert on applets, but I'll take a cut at this... 

Where are you seeing the exception?  In the browser?  If so, can you
look at the 'java console' in IE4?  If so, its contents could be
helpful.  Also, there might be some joblog info on the 400 that could
help -- it might pay to look at the joblogs of the HTTP server
(presuming you're using it). 

How are you serving the applet?  From IFS, or from the AS/400 HTTP server? 

I found some info at the PID website about applets under:

...which does remark that applets served from the HTTP server have some
special rules, and may behave in a browser-specific fashion. 

FWIW, I went to the Power Search page at deja  
        http://www.deja.com/home_ps.shtml 
and entered the following search query in the Power Search field: 
        as400 applet security 
...and got some interesting hits: 

    One suggestion was to ensure that the Codebase parameter is
    fully-qualified in the HTML source.   

    Another suggestion was to ensure that the HTTP server allows the
    serving of files with certain extensions (i.e. '.jar' or '.zip' or
    ??).  I just checked an AS/400 here, and it appears there is a
    configuration command (WRKHTTPCFG) on the AS/400 which allows you to
    specify extension-specific behaviors. 

Finally, if possible, you might want to try Netscape to see if the
behavior *is* browser-specific.

The Java Toolbox has some tools for partitioning up .jar files, so that
the server only serves what will be 'needed.'  I'm sure the PID website
has a link to the Toolbox info. 

Oh, I don't work for deja.com or get anything for anything or
suchlike...  I do find dejanews to be a wonderful resource, however, and
