Yes, there are security issues. I am not sure what Dan wants to do -- if it is an internal app on an intranet then this might not be a bad idea. An Applet IS allowed to connect back to the server where it was served from, though, so that shouldn't be a problem. Whether or not you want to open a database connection from an Applet over the the Internet is another story... the connection would not be encrypted.
