Well, Wayne, I don't know how much help Javascript is going to be to you. Java and Javascript are two different things. I don't do any Javascript so I can't help much with comparisons. You are right that experience with new languages can be of help to a programmer at times. You will find that the Object oriented approach used by Java is quite different from Basic and RPG.
