i usually run the connect client in parallel with my personal log in...
then i can switch ids for development and admin tasks without losing my IM
connection.
additionallly - there are some features like view sorting your contacts,
etc. that seem to be only in the connect client

The main reason I hear people wanting to run the Connect Client instead of
the embedded Client is that some tasks in Notes can run and will lock your
Notes Client so that you won't be able to chat as well. As far as
functionality, there isn't much difference. Of course with the embedded
client you get presence awareness for Notes Documents and Views.
