From the ND8 Domino blog:
"The only reason for not providing the DB2 storage facility on System i -
at least that I can think of - is that the storage engine relies on the
new "Viper" DB2 version?!?? This isn't working on System i either... but
hopefully it will be in the near future?!"
and
"you identified the key issue about DB2 code being different on iSeries.
This is THE reason for the decision. It has the effect of making it a
standalone piece of work for Domino. I've not been tracking iSeries DB2
roadmap to know iSeries DB2 future plans to converge with Viper."

Re: DB2 With Domino 8
I am a big fan on running domino on the iSeries. We used to run domino on
windows based servers and it was a big headache.
Unfortunately, with out direct native (iSeries db2 database access) the
product will be relegated to a mail and calendaring platform.
Early on, (several years ago) we developed a web-based application on the
iSeries using LSX and it was very clunky, hard to change and was not very
robust (inquiry only). We do still use LSX and ODBC for batch oriented
uploads of data to DB2. We quickly realized that domino development
(accessing iSeries DB2 applications) was not going to be platform for the
future web based development, (at least on the iSeries)
We were hoping to take a fresh look at it when ND8 provided native access.
Anybody have any insight to why the change in direction?

Re: DB2 With Domino 8
I agree that LEI/DECS are not tools to build fully functional applications
around.
We have used JDBC to move data back/forth between Domino and iSeries DB2
and that works well.
Being able to store data directly in DB2 tables is where we should be
heading though. Unfortunate decision by IBM and the Domino blog mentions
that the IBM iSeries crowd bought into that decision -- it would be nice
to hear from the iSeries side to hear the reasons. If DB2 UDB on the
iSeries is drastically different that DB2 on other platforms I can
understand why DB2 implementation on the iSeries is delayed -- but at
least provide a statement of direction...

Also, just wanted to comment; I too am concerned that the iSeries platform
is
being shunned. "Other important database work???? Work arounds include
LEI/DEC?"
We tried using these so called tools and in my opion you can not build
solid
bullet proof applications with work-around tools.

Re: DB2 With Domino 8
Bob, I'm not sure how I missed that one (since I have that in my RSS
reader...). I'm going to throw in my 2cents now.
Thanks - glad to have some official word.

Re: DB2 With Domino 8
I believe DB2 was always intended for applications (whether stated or
not).
You're probably right about 8.0.1.

I thought that I heard, and I am probably wrong, that DB2 integration
won't be out until 8.0.1. And even then, it isn't for mail files, but
rather for applications.
I could be wrong, though.
