How does that work? I thought for the client to resolve a server, it needed either: - connection doc with IP - connection doc with DNS address - server in WINS My understanding is that the client will look for a connection doc and use the information there to find the server. Upon not finding the server, it will reference your server's NNN to find a valid address and finally WINS using the host name. How would the client reference DNS for the proper domain: e.g. I am on .ca.usa.com and my server is on .md.usa.com. How would the client know to query server1.md.usa.com? Is there something you need to do in DNS, like just a server1 alias? I am curious because when we moved from Win32 to the iSeries, two weeks after our migrations, mis-configured clients all of a sudden could not get to the server since the WINS entries tombstoned. The only solutions were to have the users configure properly or put in static WINS entries that would not expire. Due to the volume of calls, we had to go with static WINS entries and worry about mis-configured clients for another day. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a PRIVATE message. (I assume during dr the clients have access to a DNS which is pointing to the new location of the domino server) Walter Scanlan Senior Software Engineer Domino & Workplace for iSeries 507-286-6088 wscanlan@xxxxxxxxxx GKern@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent by: domino400-bounces+wscanlan=us.ibm.com@xxxxxxxxxxxx 10/20/2005 11:14 AM Please respond to Lotus Domino on the iSeries / AS400 To domino400@xxxxxxxxxxxx cc Subject Disaster Recovery test - DNS resolution question We're in the midst of our first DR implementation test. Currently we're maintaining our dns server locally and have a BP who's hosting the hardware we restored our R6.5 data on. We can ping the remote server so we know were talking. But were having a problem having users connect to Notes at the DR site. We want our users to not notice that the server is no longer on site, Apparently R6.5.1 is smart enough to know when our local site is up that it won't even try to connect to the DR site. The only way we can force a connect (while the local site is up) is to do a file, database, open, and enter the IP address of the server at the DR site. I'm not sure though, how to tell the notes clients that in the event that our local server is not responding that it should look for the server at the DR site. My thought is to enter Secondary Server info in the Advanced setting of my location document on my client in the hope that it will use it to refer to the DR site. If this works then I can use a desktop policy setting to roll this info out to the clients. I'm going to test this tonight. Comments anyone?
