I'd love to know why they dropped JVM 1.1.8.  Just because it was "old and 
out of fashion", or was there a technical reason?

Found the following post from our friend Walter Scanlan from April 2004 on 

this list:

Rob,
        Domino 6.x and 6.5x will be supported on the release after V5R2. 
Domino 5.x will not.  This is due to the fact that the next release of 
OS/400 will not provide JVM 1.1.8 which is required for Domino 5.x
