The three partitions on our 520-7453 are pretty tame.  Testing and 
development only.  (And my email file - someone has to be the guinea pig). 
 But no trouble starting them up at the same time.
We run fixup, updall, compact on all partitions on a weekly basis, when 
the servers are down.

I thought the problem with the leftover shared memory, etc was only after 
the server ends abnormally, such ending them *IMMED or after a crash. I am 

having trouble starting both servers at the same time (one of which is 
Samtime) on my lightweight i5 520 #8950 and need to look into staggering 
them. But I never do the cleanup thing unless there is a crash.

The problem with taking the server down and bringing it up after the 
change is that if you end multiple "partitions" automatically and bring 
them back up, we generally will get memory errors unless we use iSeries 
Navigator to clear out all the shared memory. However, according to Walter 


(I believe) there are plans to create an i5/OS command that will clear all 


of the shared mem, semaphores, and kernel message queues. When that 
command is available I would be more willing to end and restart the 
servers through a batch process.
