We don't block at the server, so I don't have this enabled on our Domino server, but we have a filtering solution in place between the server and the Internet. Visiting with the administrator for that system, he indicated that spamcop and spamhaus block the lion's share of anything coming in. He actually has six other lists active, but the other six rarely block much because once it fails on spamcop, it's dead. If it survives the spamcop check, it is checked against spamhaus. If it survives that check, it checks the next, and so on. So your third choice might be negligible because the first two are getting most of the spam, if Domino handles the spam in the same fashion. Word to the wise: We discovered that one of easynet's lists was blocking our server (not the blackhole list) even though there had been no relaying or spam activity from our system. The DNS configuration for our server didn't meet with their standards, so they listed us and we suddenly couldn't reach some customers. I would recommend that you occasionally check the list aggregators and make sure that your server isn't being listed somewhere and you are unaware of it. We made a slight modification to our DNS configuration and they delisted us within 48 hours, so really don't have a gripe against them -- I'm merely bringing this up so you are aware that it can happen. A couple of the aggregators that I use for checking lots of blacklists at once are: http://openrbl.org/ (this one is very quick and checks about 30 lists) http://moensted.dk/spam/ (this one is slower because it checks over 400 lists; you are guaranteed to be listed on at least a couple, but that may be due to geography rather than an accusation of spam activity -- be sure to read the information on the list before you get excited about being listed) Patrick |---------+-------------------------------> | | Chris Whisonant | | | <Chris.Whisonant@com| | | porium.com> | | | Sent by: | | | domino400-bounces@mi| | | drange.com | | | | | | | | | 10/28/2003 07:36 AM | | | Please respond to | | | Lotus Domino on the | | | iSeries / AS400 | | | | |---------+-------------------------------> >------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | | | To: Lotus Domino on the iSeries / AS400 <domino400@xxxxxxxxxxxx> | | cc: | | Subject: Re: DNS Blacklist Services | >------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| I did some checking and using the blacklist feature on our symantec gateway we blocked 10,808 messages yesterday using the blacklisting. Using their heuristic engine on a low setting, we blocked another 8,664 messages. We have the options of using three blacklists. We had the following results from these blacklists: bl.spamcop.net - 6,770 blocks sbl.spamhaus.org - 3,960 blocks relays.ordb.org - 78 blocks All of these are free lists. I am actually going to remove the relays.ordb.org and add the suggested blackholes.easynet.nl to see if we catch any more (since the blocking by relays.ordb.org was negligible). Really helped us: blackholes.easynet.nl; relays.ordb.org Definitely turn this on also: Verify that local domain recipients exist in the Domino Directory: Enabled This was the #1 reason that we upgraded to R6. Prior to that our mail.box was getting stuffed with junk mail. Blacklisting definitely helped with spam but that other thing stopped us from having to clean out mail.box 2 times a day to keep mail rolling. I want to give the DNS Blacklist a try. Can anyone who uses this recommend some good public DNS Blacklist Service Providers? Low latency and zero to low cost are a plus.
