This is a known issue with outlook express, as defined in the following TechNote * Title: POP3 Server Error: "Unable to Gain Exclusive Access to Maildrop" * Product Area: Domino Server Windows NT * Product Release: Domino Server 4.6x * Topic: Messaging & Mail \\ POP3 Document #: 170194 Last Update: 07/07/2000 (Document link: Database 'SIMS Documents', View '5. Info Mgmt & Dist Guide\by Guideline Type', Document 'Circulation Field')(?) Circulation: Published - This document is technically verified and technically edited. Problem: A customer is connecting to the Domino server and retrieving their mail via POP3 when they encounter a power failure or their machine crashes. The customer is unable to re-establish the connection to the server. The Domino server shows the following errors: "xx/xx/xx 09:22:33 POP3 Server: Unable to open mail file for Joe User/Support: unable to obtain exclusive access to maildrop xx/xx/xx 09:22:33 POP3 Server: 9.95.50.105 disconnected" The user is not able to complete the downloading of their mail messages until this error is resolved. Show Task indicates the Domino server believes that it is still 'Providing Service for Joe User/Support'. Attempting to restart the POP3 server task only results in the POP3 Server Control Task stopping. Solution: This issue was reported to Lotus Quality Engineering and has been resolved in Domino 5.0.3. Excerpt from the Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino Release 5.0.3 QMR fix list: POP3 Mail Server SPR# BACY45SGHG - Fix the POP3 error, "Unable to obtain exclusive access to mail drop," by adding support for POP3 autologout. [5.0.3] If a large number of messages requiring conversion to MIME had to be downloaded, the R4 POP3 server converts every message during its response to the PASS command. If the connection was broken, the server continues to convert until all messages are converted. In Domino 4.6x, the only way to resolve this issue is to restart the Domino server. Supporting Information: The POP3 protocol (RFC 1939) defines that the POP3 server must acquire an exclusive access lock on the maildrop as necessary to prevent messages from being modified or removed before the session enters the UPDATE state. Each time there is a problem, the log files show "Unable to open mail file for userid: Unable to obtain exclusive access to maildrop". What's going on with the maildrop? This user has downloaded email several times, and then it just stops working and that message is in the server logs. Note- everyone uses Outlook Express for their email client as opposed to Notes. Additionally, in Administrator on the "Server" tab, I see no tasks or connected users. This tab should show me the different tasks running on the Domino server, but they are just blank now. How do I correct this? I need to know what to do about the mail user/maildrop issue and how to get back the server tasks. Thanks in advance, Shane D.
