Re: AS400/iseries/midrange/RPG experience no longer marketable?

It all depends. Recently a fellow midranger suffered a debilitating
medical condition. This condition caused him to be unable to walk for
quite some time. He's recently started getting around. I would think
this person is extremely marketable. Why? Because he is a frequent
contributor on the midrange-l list and the RPG list also hosted by this
site. He has monitors a few other forums. He speaks at COMMON and a few
user groups. He's pretty much known to as the go to guy when it comes to
doing things with RPG rather outside of the box.
Oh, you want to program sockets in RPG? Ask him.
Oh, you want to update a cell in a particular Excel spreadsheet? Ask him.
Oh, you want to exchange data with an external SQL database based on SQL
Server or somewhere else? He can help.
Oh, you want to read/write directly to stream files (aka IFS) with RPG? He
can help.
Oh, you want to read data directly from someone else's website with RPG?
He can help.

The thing is, don't walk in with an old printer spacing chart showcasing
some of the many reports you've generated and expect people to sacrifice a
goat at your alter.

And, if you need access to a system to hone up your skills there are
several time share services out there. Some of them will always be loaded
with the latest version of the operating system.
