Hi,

Well, I spent 2 years studying nights and weekends to learn Java related
things while I was still on the AS/400 doing RPG ILE.

I also took 5 weeks of classes at Sun on all the Java topics that
related to what I was interested in doing.

You have to take the introductory classes, and then get some experience.
I was fortunate to have a client that included me in their first
Java/AS/400 WebSphere project.

>From there, it was lucky breaks maybe, but I am on the forefront of best
practices now and have some major clients, where I give there projects
planning, direction, and do the development.

I did many presentations to AS/400 User Groups and to Common on learning
the new technologies. One presentation is "A Day in the Life of a
WebSphere Developer", another is "AS/400 Legacy Integration" and
"Running Tomcat on the AS/400". I also ran the Java Labs at Common with
Don Denoncourt.

Sometimes I think about teaching a week class for AS/400 programmers on
Java...

Kristen

So what is the best approach? What should I learn?

You need to broaden your horizons beyond the iSeries if you want to
remain
busy with contract work. I started on the System 3 years ago, moved
through the S34/36/38/AS400. For years and years I was always able to
work
every hour I had available and more. I saw the market changing and
started
to train myself in the Microsoft Development tools, VB, Access, SQL
Server.
I still have iSeries accounts but more and more, my work is Microsoft
centric. The last year, I've been busier than ever in my 30 year
career.
