I have had good luck with side jobs, and have always been upfront with my current job about them. I have found that if I set very strict limits on my side job's work hours, etc then it was easier to sell to my real boss. The key is having a flexible contract...no specified/required days or hours, just a set 'average number of hours' per week. I have always tried to keep my side jobs from paying me more a week than my real job. If the side job passes your real job, then your real job's work will suffer... Of course, a 15-20 hours a week on the side can easily match 40 hours a week of 'real' work....
