David,
Make sure you do delete the XML files.
As Hak pointed out, they don't get removed by an uninstall.
The new install will pick up the files, which is normally just what you
want.
But in this case, you will be just finished installing V5R1, reboot and
look at Dr Watson again because your XML files were corrupted to start
with.

Guess what came in the mail today!?!!   My V5R1 install CD's!!  WooHoo!

Okay, now, maybe (fingers crossed) this whole problem becomes a moot
point?
Maybe I could/should just install V5R1.  Whaddya think?  Hmm?  Sound good?

Phil, I read in the archives a couple of pointers that you had made after
you upgraded, stuff you "wished you'd known before".

Chris, I know you recently upgraded.

Okay, CODErs...  what's the best means of upgrading?  Uninstall then
reinstall?  Reformat the hard drive?  or simply install over the top? What
needs to be backed up?  Where's the "gotchas"?

It'd be REAL helpful to the rest of us if we had a "V5R1 FAQ" somewhere -

1. the required java runtime is missing, or
2. CODE has problems with the XML files.

Since it has been working for you and,  the ONLY change is the OS400A to
OS400, I would think that somehow XML files might be the problem. Have you
deleted the XML files, including the FVDCTCP.TXT?

After you removing the files, please make sure that you close all CODE
programs before you start again. What we can do now is to minimize the
interactions and narrow the scope for problem investigation.

The 'STRCODE setting' is on the console page.

Okay, let me see if I can go over this one more time.

When I start the Communications Console, I get the Dr. Watson (DrW) error
that was documented earlier.  Therefore, I cannot switch the OS400 server
name back to OS400A.

My Startup folder contains icons for the Code400 Editor initialization
(C:\WDT400\codebrws.exe) and Communication Daemon
(C:\WDT400\system\evfctcpd.exe).  When I boot up, I get the same DrW
dialog.
So...

I feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a very hard place.  Catch-22.  I
can't change the server name except through Communications Console.  I
can't
start Communications Console without receiving a DrW.  Ergh...

Take pity on my, fellow Coders...  last week I had to use (gasp!) SEU.  I
think I pulled a muscle...

As far as STRCODE, I have it running in an emulation window.  My STRCODE
command is

           STRCODE SERVER(OS400)
        RMTLOCNAME(DSCHOPP)
        CMNTYPE(*TCPIP)
        PORT(*DFT)
        USERID(&USERID)
        PASSWORD(&PASSWD)

where &USERID and &PASSWD are retrieved at runtime and my *CURLIB is MY
personal library.

I had weird problems like this when using OS400 and OS400A (don't remember
which one was for STRCODE) as server names.  What I had to do was
completely
remove all of the servers in the comm console and reboot.  Rebooting was
important or else things were screwy.

Then I added a server and gave it a better name.  For my STRCODE session,
I
pass parameters so as not to allow any *PRV and provided it a better
server
name that isn't used anywhere else.  If you're using STRCODE, make sure
you
have a *CURLIB and that it is your library alone.  A *USRSPC is created
and
things don't work too well if your *CURLIB is QGPL and other CODE users
also use QGPL for the *CURLIB.
