One hassle I have is getting used to the changes in keys. OK, I resist
change as longs as I can. When the 3196 came out, I wouldn't touch it until
I couldn't 5250 keyboard anymore. When they came out with the "pc like
keyboard." same thing. Now I'm crossed between to AS/400 worlds. I still
like my right control to function as Enter and my enter key to be field
exit.

When I go to code, I don't find a way to make that a happen, so I am sure I
am entering Ctl many times I want something to happen. Once in code, I don't
find a way to press field exit, blanking the rest of the line and going to
the line below. I don't find a way to reset back to what the display just
had a minute ago by pressing 1 key (F5) I have to pull down Edit, select
Undo and hope I click on it right, because if I didn't I get some other
thing to back out of. Oh, yes. I can still use the line commands like
before, but getting the cursor over to that side of the screen seems very
unresponsive to me. I can also press Ctl-Z to undo whatever I have done,
but who remembers that. F5 has been the reset function key when editing
source since at least 1988 and I think it may have existed since the
beginning of programming on this machine. That is what feels so weird. I
hit the wrong key and it stubbornly sits there and does nothing!

If I do use the right keys it is powerful, but figuring it out a very
different game. The online help very neat if I have an RPG or language
related question. It is nearly useless if I have any questions about how to
use code.

Violaine's book is more helpful, but she goes from talking about how to set
filter's on the library list, to talking about how to run the program in
DOS mode in the next paragraph of the same section of the book. How many of
use will ever run the program in DOS mode?

Today we find out CODE designer can't even handle *AFPDS box and line
functions that have been part of the AS/400 for as long as ILE has been
around.

We were running V3.2.3 and couldn't access our large production libraries
because code would crash, and you would have to reboot. One of our users
just put up v4.5 Websphere and said it works a bit slow but does open the
large libraries now.

What we need is standard tools that work for everything. Tools that do the
job efficiently. When new things are added, we need those tools to handle
all enhancements as quickly as possible. Don't out date our old tools by
leaving them behind while giving us incomplete new tools that can't handle
the jobs we have for them to do.

That's my two cents worth. I have been working on this platform since '79
and know it well, but am not completely comfortable with code yet. As long
as I have to go through such drastic changes, you can forget all the
improved productivity it gives because every time I press a right control,
I have wasted my time.

Code is a nice tool, but seems to not be quite ready for prime time in a
number of ways!
