Title: Beating the "Free Code/400" dead horse...

Chris,

I think, with V4R5 and earlier versions, you have to have an as/400 to order it.  And it costs $300.  But I don’t think there is a mechanism on the as/400 in place to check concurrent users.  It’s not that I’m advocating piracy.  It’s that with V5 it is free if you have an as/400 and is not free if you don’t have an as/400.  For that matter, you can download a trial version from IBM’s website.  By the time the trial version expires the product may be free.  There’s a rationale.

It’s going to be free real soon.  By the time you order it, install it, get people up to speed on it, it may be free.  So why spend all that money?  Use it to go to the next Common instead.

What I’m not sure about is whether your OS must be at V5 for it to be free or if V5 needs to be GA’d (which is in June I think).  I think it’s the latter because I also believe that you can get the new ADTS bundle (the one that includes all the compilers) for V4R5.  If you have software subscription.

Phil

PS: There are a couple verbs throughout my post: THINK and BELIEVE.  This means you’ve got to verify it.  I could be wrong.

I figured I'd have to order the client software, but would you happen to know if that will cost the $300 per seat, or can it be ordered with the machine at no additional cost?  BTW, thanks again, Phil!

I think in order to have the client software you need the cd’s.  QCODE contains the server side pgms necessary to use Code on the client.  This is my understanding.

BTW, there are probably PTF’s you’ll need to use the latest Code/400 version on V4R4.

Thanks for the reply, Phil.  We also have the QCODE library on our box (we're running 4R4 now), but will we also get the PC CD's or does that have to be ordered separately?

Thanks

Chris

I think you can order it though shop ibm.

It’s going to be free.  I don’t know if you have to wait for V5R1 to be GA’d or what.  But in the interim, it’s $300 a copy.  I wouldn’t buy six – I’d buy one.  Especially since it’s going to be free soon anyway.  Whatever is necessary on the server is probably already installed.  I connect to as/400’s that do not have the cl2 product installed and no problem.  Library QCODE exists.  On the wdts cd’s, you get Code/400, Code Designer, VA for RPG, VA for Java, Distributed Debugger, Websphere Studio.  Enough stuff to fill up 3 cd’s.

I’m still learning to use Code/400.  When you have green screen access it will take a lot of use before I’m faster in Code than in seu.  But over all I like it.  I really like the Project Organizer.  I hope they add an ERD tool to Code Designer.

Hi all,

Sorry to bring this up again, we are currently reviewing the code/400 software and I've recommended that we purchase 6 licenses for the developers.  However, I've just found out that we  are upgrading to a 830 on V4R5.  What would be the simplest way for us to get the copies? Is it included in some software package we get with the machine, or do we have to order it separately?  I'd appreciate some input.  I would like to get it copies in ASAP, but if I can get it with the machine, I'll wait.  Thanks for the input!

Thanks,
