Hey - if you're generating it it doesn't matter how easy the code is for anybody to read and if you have to gen unwanted return variables who cares!

In defence of the COBOL team, it is really hard to introduce this kind of feature (subprocs or prototypes for example) because you a) Have to get permission from the internal IBM COBOL council and b) Have to ensure that nothing you do will leave you with a problem in implementing future ANSI standards.

It took us over 12 months of work and research to get agreement to adding the LIKE keyword to COBOL!
