Here's an interesting bit: without the ON SIZE ERROR clause, the PROGRAM
STATUS structure doesn't get updated, even if an error occurs. I had a
divide by zero, but without the ON SIZE ERROR, and my data structure
remained empty. I added the ON SIZE ERROR and the data structure got
populated.

That brings me back to my original question: The COBOL Reference says that
the area is populated when "an error occurs". What exactly constitutes an
"error"? And is there no way to force this "error" condition (without
impacting program execution) to get the area populated - whenever I want?
