Michael, How about "It depends"? ILE programs, if designed and created correctly, can be fast, with little overhead on the call. Does the utility program get called many times from the same programs, before they end? Do they get called once from a lot of different programs? CL and COBOL, (and yes gasp RPG) all have ILE capabilities. Some system stuff I have done in ILE CL and application in ILE COBOL. Jon Paris and Susan Ganter are great resources for learning ILE. They teach/have taught classes about it. You have already heard from Jon on this and the WDSC list. COMMON would also be a good education source to learn system i type things, although COBOL is VERY light in sessions. ILE concepts taught for RPG apply, even though some of the examples have to be translated to COBOL. HTH On 8/23/06, Michael Rosinger <mrosinger@xxxxxxxxx> wrote:
Thanks Terry. That is a good resource. Here's another migration question for you (and anyone else that wants to chime in). What is the equivalent of Assembler on iSeries? Correct me if I am wrong, but it is my understanding that there is no Assembler on iSeries. We have several callable utility sub-routines that are written in Assembler. The reason Assembler is the best choice for these things on the mainframe is its efficiency and speed for things that are called many times by many programs. So if these routines have to be rewritten, what language would be best suited? -- Regards, Michael Rosinger Systems Programmer / DBA Computer Credit, Inc. 640 West Fourth Street Winston-Salem, NC 27101 336-761-1524 m rosinger at cciws dot com "Winchester Terry" <terry.winchester@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:mailman.667.1156336347.5750.cobol400-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx > Here's a direct link: > > http://www.systeminetwork.com/resources/code/misccode/cobolcode/ > > Terry Winchester > Programmer/Analys
