Don, As I understand it, when you create the Physical File using CRTPF and it contains a "reference" file (TFUDD) the field characteristics are taken from the reference file when the phycial object is created. Once the PF has been created, the compiler then gets it's internal field information from the actual object, hence the need to create the PF before compiling a program. Or maybe I didn't understand your question!
