01  WS-TEMP-FIELD        PIC X(3).
01  WS-COUNT             PIC 99.
COMPUTE WS-COUNT = FUNCTION NUMVAL(WS-TEMP-FIELD).

The FUNCTION NUMVAL will work with the move statement as well.

It may another stupid cobol question be, but I wonder about is there any
way to move alphanumeric field to numeric field in COBOL pgm. How can i
do this  without write down a lots of pgm statements.
