You can use something like this :

01      field-alpha     PIC x(someting)
01      field-numeric   PIC s9(something)     (This field can NOT be
packed! (Comp-someting))

If      field-alpha is numeric
        move field-alpha to field-numeric
end-if.

It may another stupid cobol question be, but I wonder about is there any
way to move alphanumeric field to numeric field in COBOL pgm. How can i
do this  without write down a lots of pgm statements.
