Which are you trying to do John?  Return a value or use exported variables?
Or are you really trying to use both?

If you are attempting to return a result, then the CALLER uses CALL .....
RETURNING and the callee uses PROCEDURE DIVISION USING .... RETURNING .....

To share variables by exporting them (not normally considered good practice)
you specify the data item as being EXTERNAL.  The (service) programs sharing
the data must all be running in the same activation group.
