I do enjoy a lively debate! :) The percentages I mentioned about COBOL and RPG come from the March 2001 "Extreme Perspectives" survey published jointly by IBM and News400. The survey looked at 750 AS/400 shops from around the world. Respondents said that 69% of development was performed in RPG and 8% of development was performed in COBOL. Copies of the survey by looking for article ID 9790 at www.iseriesnetwork.com. Good point about OS/400 being able to manage multiple environments on the same box. A merged platform may indeed run multiple environments.
