Horse hockey!

COBOL handles duplicate names with no problem at all - it is far more
powerful and flexible than RPG in this area. All you have to do is qualify
the name. e.g. to reference field PGMID in format MAIN you would say

MOVE 'ABCD' to PGMID of MAIN.

I find it hard to believe that there are any COBOL programmers who don't
know this - perhaps you are having a communication problem?

When the COBOL compiler generates the 05 level items for record formats
from a COPY DDS-.... it always qualifies the 05 level name with the format
name for this exact purpose.
