Yep,

That's my understanding - it is standard practice to have ALIAS names when using
files with COBOL to take advantage of 32 character data names.

However one can use the original data names BUT a COBOL program has to have
unique data names so if there are any duplicates in any of the files and they
are referenced there will be a compilation error.

Unless of course someone else knows different.
