I will do that, problem is this is not really what I am after as the target
files will not be NULL capable but the journal entry has NULL fields which I
need to manage. Long story but as I said it is part of a LAA so my hand are
already tied behind my back.
Thanks very much for your persistence, I am gaining a lot of knowledge about
the process from all the responses.

I guess I'd step back a bit and get the update-with-nulls function working
in general without using the data from the journal entry, but just
temporarily use some hard-coded data for a specific file where you only put
the '1' value for fields that you know are null capable.
Maybe it's the journal entry, or the interpretation of the journal entry,
that's at fault.
